Last few photographs of Peregrine

Who would have expected a Peregrine to watch a Wood Pigeon land on the ledge in front of it and walk past without any attempt to catch it.  Extraordinary!   Had the Peregrine already just eaten a huge meal, of Pigeon?!   Just a couple more photographs to portray the moving on from Peregrine postings........

Ely Peregrines - Juveniles practising flying skills

What a display of competence within one week of leaving the nest and flying!    Peregrines use their flight speed to catch prey and need to be extremely agile to change direction quickly.    Sometimes they are calling and often keeping a keen eye on their sibling.

Ely Peregrines IV - Adult birds

Here are images of Adult birds in that their fronts are barred and not streaky.   One has to wonder at what point the patterning changes.   I think the birds carrying food are Adults, with the last two photographs being of the same bird.

Ely Peregrines III

It was such a privilege seeing so many behaviours of Peregrine and the first image is an adult with its three juveniles.   I was told it was the male Peregrine.

The other photographs in this posting are juveniles, as far as I can tell.   The juveniles have streaky fronts while the adults have barred fronts.   Not always easy to discern!

Second installment of Peregrine and Pigeon

The two mornings I spent watching and photographing this family of Peregrines around Ely Cathedral have left me with tough decisions as to how many photographs to post!   Anyway, here are the images which chart the fate of the Wood Pigeon when an adult Peregrine came calling.

Both birds live to see another day!

Family of Peregrines - Ely Cathedral

A friend tipped me off on Thursday night that there are Peregrines on Ely Cathedral.   I was there before 07.00 yesterday morning and have been downloading and processing photographs ever since!   Three juveniles fledged last Sunday and at least one parent is still with them.   I've learnt how to recognise the differences between adults and juveniles but not to distinquish male and female adults, although the female is markedly larger than the male.

I've been fortunate to see different behaviours and will be posting more images shortly.   By way of a taster, here is an adult bird extremely close to a Wood Pigeon on the Octagon.

Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker

I have become attached to what I now know are two juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers in the garden!   I don't yet have irrefutable photographic evidence that there are two using the feeders, because they have been on separate feeders, and I use a telephoto lens.   But I do have evidence of some of the antics.   I'm including a couple of photographs which also include the female.

Evening light in Wasdale

One never knows how the light will play on the Fells.   We were driving back to Wasdale having spent a day in the Eskdale Valley.

Magic light in Wasdale - October 2018

Have just completed a couple more Blurb books and here are a few photographs of visiting Wasdale in October 2018.   The light was variable and exciting of Wastwater and it was a joy visiting towards the end of the day and the next morning.   It is a special place!
