Alongside The Cam - Clayhithe

I'm still not sure which Damselfly this is - Beautiful or Emerald.   Geographically it is more likely to be Emerald but from the Field Guide (courtesy of the Cambridge Camera Club when I concluded my year as President) it looks more like Beautiful because of the golden coloured wings.

I wish I could have seen more of this traction engine!   The only glimpse was from the footpath near the bridge at Clayhithe.   Its condition is immaculate.   Presumably there's a traction engine rally nearby.

The Canada goose is alright!    It had moved from this unusual position by the time the dogs and I were on our way back.

Kingfishers at Bottisham Lock area

From a fellow dog walker there was confirmation of there having been more than one pair of nesting Kingfishers in this area, but evenso it was a delight to catch two Kingfishers flying together.   Whether they were a pair or a couple of young from the same nest will never be known.   Getting either or both of the Kingfishers in focus was difficult too, but as these postings are a photographic record they can claim their rightful place!   The reflections aren't bad.

There is a fish rising near the birds in the first photograph but that will remain unidentified..........    In the third image the in-focus following bird is flying over the reflection of the leading bird - potentially confusing.

Others at Devil's Dyke

It took a while to spot Chalkhill Blues, but there were other butterflies and bees about.   I think the first is likely to be a moth because of its antennae which are most elaborate and fern-like.   Then there's a Ringlet (but which one?!), a closed up Small Tortoiseshell I think, a Little Skipper, and might the last one be a Speckled Wood?   More time needs to be spent on identification....

Chalkhill Blues at Devil's Dyke

I think there are fewer Chalkhill Blue butterflies on this section of Devil's Dyke this year, but it might have been too early in the morning for more to have stirred.   Most were on Knapweed when not skitting about at a distance.   Perhaps another visit is indicated....

Local Wildlife

It has been a while since I last posted anything - even though there's plenty to post too!   I must have about two months' worth of photographs which include images from a recent week in Wengen - they will come!

Here are some photographs of wildlife taken locally since I got back.   I always enjoy taking photographs of birds - Common Tern, Buzzard and Crow.   Quite what the Crow has found to eat escapes me......

There aren't that many Field Poppies these days because of the way farmers eliminate 'weeds'.  Thankfully there are still some Campion too.

Some insects too, but I can't identify those on the Thistle..............
