Sculling and Rowing - different combinations

This morning was particularly foggy so chose to go down to The Cam and was not disappointed by the number of (town) boats on the river.   There is one combination, a pair, which I didn't see this morning and one which I have never seen before nor likely to again - an eight boat with just 6 rowers and a cox in it!   Perhaps they were unable to find enough people or two failed to turn up - an interesting arrangement whatever.

The first three images are of sculling where each person in the boat has two blades or oars.    They appear as a Single, a Double and a Quad scull.   This Quad scull has a cox in the bow of the boat, and it is also possible to have a coxless Quad scull but I didn't see one today.

The next boats are Rowing boats where each person in the boat has only one blade or oar.   The most difficult boat to row is a Pair which is the combination I didn't see on the river this morning.    Below are two coxed Fours - one where the cox is in the stern and the other where the cox is in the bow.   I think it is possible to have an uncoxed Four but I didn't see that today.   Then follows an Eight (always coxed) after which is the most unusual arrangement of a Six!
