Waders at Snettisham

At last some images of the Waders from last Friday's visit.   By a long way the largest flocks of Waders were Knot, plenty of Oystercatchers, and a few Avocets which are always a delight to see.   There were a few Brent Geese (which I do know are not Waders), but they were also feeding on the mudflats so are included.

Plenty more Knot............   Much of the time they are feeding on the mudflats, then as the tide comes in quickly, they take off in large flocks, filling the skies with crowded displays of agility.    The lower images are taken when the flocks of Knot swoop over the shingle beach to spend time on the fresh water lagoons, and elsewhere.   That is the opportunity to get closer images of the Knot.

Then a few other birds were recorded - Oystercatchers, Avocet and Shell Duck

Wonderful, wonderful pictures that capture the essence of this natural spectacle - so well worth the effort of getting up early to go. I think the wide screen format is very effective is bringing out the scale of the event and the sense of space up on the Wash. Also good to have embraced something of the diversity of species. Though all excellent, 4, 7 and 9 are favourites.

It is rewarding to receive feedback on postings and in particular to know which images are favoured.

The next time I visit Snettisham for the Waders I think I shall go for an earlier wind and tide combination as getting to the car park in the dark and making the walk to the shingle spit during dawn is memorable - and that's before seeing the spectacle! The lighting conditions don't seem to be a consideration for the bird activity - they swoop/swoosh overhead whatever light there is.
