Great Spotted Woodpecker - Female and Juvenile

It was so exciting to see these two Great Spotted Woodpeckers in the garden this morning.   I don't think I've ever seen an adult feeding a juvenile before and although the lighting wasn't that good, the joy was undiminished.

Around or on the New Feeder

A new bird feeder was introduced into the garden a couple of days ago and although I haven't managed to photograph new birds on feeders because of the new foods, I'm not expecting it to be long.   A regular supply of Sunflower hearts and Nyger seeds should extend the repertoire and attract finches and perhaps nuthatches?

Hail on the Windscreen

Wind, rain and hail soon followed the juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker..........   It must be tough for juvenile birds trying to make sense of all the novel experiences they are encountering these days!

Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker

Given that there has been a Male and Female Great Spotted Woodpecker in the garden in recent weeks, it was (hopefully) only time before the appearance of at least one juvenile would be seen, and bring cheer.   It happened this afternoon - and the juvenile 'sort of' landed on the bird table rather than a peanut feeder that its parents have been doing.  Almost immediately it took off again.  I expect it will be finding food here before long and I shall enjoy watching the characteristic red patch on the top of its juvenile head either appear on the nape of its head (male) or disappear all together (female).

With the large number of young Blue and Great Tits in the garden at present, I need to continue trying to get a decent photograph of a parent feeding a fledgeling.   This will have to do meantime.

There can be up to six fledglings on one feeder - and sibling rivalry too!   After bathing comes careful preening......

Birds in this morning's Garden

Getting up earlier this morning might explain some of the less usual birds being seen today.    Shall I get up earlier tomorrow morning............?   House Sparrow (female), Chaffinch (female & male), Red-legged Partridge, Blackcap (only the second one seen in garden this summer), Great Spotted Woodpecker (male), Blackbird eating more berries off the Amelanchier.
